22 women of Ndibai village in Kenya’s Nakuru county got fed up with the need to drink contaminated water from the river, for which they had to walk many miles in unsafe environments. They decided to form the Mwihoko group to realize access to safe water at a reasonable distance for their families and the community.
Supported by the Kenyan branch of Soroptimists International Europe (SIE) the now empowered Mwihoko women have turned their community from beneficiaries to partners in water management.
SIE, a service organisation of professional women in Europe and parts of Africa, strives for a better world for women and children through awareness, advocacy and action. On average SIE supports 6.750 projects with a gross net amount of €7.5 million per year, inclusive of mentoring and scholarship projects.
