Tegemeo is Swahili and means ‘support’ as well as ‘expectations’. Both support and expectations were low when the Tegemeo Women Group in 2005 was launched by a small local women group to promote gender equality at community level through a water and sanitation project, serving some 12.000 citizens in four villages in Mweteni, Tanzania.
Today Tegemeo is a highly competent membership organisation capable of project oversight and financial administration. Tegemeo members have become trainers on sanitation, hygiene and women rights, presenting their approach at regional and national workshops.
Tegemeo is a textbook example of how effective and important empowerment and capacity building of grassroots women groups are for the realisation of Sustainable Development Goals 5 and 6 at community level.
