WfWP member “TGNP Mtandao Monthly”
Tanzanian Gender Networking Programme has published their monthly updates “TGNP Mtandao Monthly” for September and December 2014.
Hereby a summary of the December Activities
In December 2014, the focus of TGNP was mainly on the series of activities to commemorate 16 days of activism against Gender Based Violence (GBV). The activities were conducted by TGNP Mtandao in collaboration with Knowledge Centers, community level activists, CSOs, local governments, development partners and other stakeholders. The occasion really was a success and it brought more than 500 participants from different parts of the country including community animators, activists, media practitioners, students and youth.
Furthermore, from October to December in the Tarime district, Mara region, there is annually a ‘cutting season’. This is the time when girls of 7 years and above are subjected to Female Genital Mutilation, and when boys are circumcised. In collaboration with other organisations, TGNP conducted a number of activities to address the major concerns in the area. They for instance hosted a first ever boys camp in December 2014, in which 200 boys sought refuge to escape unsafe traditional male circumcision during cutting season. TGNP indicates that even though women are significantly more likely to experience GBV than men, it has also shown that working with men, is critical to the prevention of and response to GBV, which is why they organised a boys camp.
To find out more about TGNP’s recent activities and why they find it important to pay attention to men when it comes to Gender Based Violence, read their monthly news flash of December 2014!
