Key actors in making small-holder farming climate change resilient
Women for Water Partnership represented women at the Wilton Park Conference on challenges for creating resilient agricultural systems in the face of resource scarcity and climate change. Salamatu Garba Executive Director of Women Farmers Advancement Network (WOFAN), Nigeria, and WfWP representative at the conference, emphasised the importance of supporting women in their efforts to make small-holder farming climate change resilient.
In her presentation entitled “Give women a voice and confidence and empower them economically and politically to take decisions on issues that concern them”, Ms. Garba outlined the preconditions that are needed to make full use of women's potential in sustainable and climate resilient smallholder farming. She emphasised the importance of tailor made solutions that take into account the local circumstances. These are best researched in situ and shared between farming communities. Women's social networks are excellent vehicles for this knowledge sharing and up-scaling of small scale projects and approaches.
Small-holder farming does not stand alone. it needs to be embedded in a resilient supply chain that builds on the principles of sustainable development.
