Women for Water Partnership (WfWP) congratulates her Steering Committee member Kusum Athukorala on winning the 2012 Women in Water Award for Leadership Development. “Kusum is a pioneer woman in the water sector”, WfWP’s President Alice Bouman-Dentener comments. “Winning the Women in Water Award is a much deserved acknowledgement of her work.”
Based in Sri Lanka, Ms Athukorala is a multidisciplinary skilled researcher and advocacy specialist, internationally recognized for her work in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), gender and water, crossing disciplinary and academic boundaries to water management.
“Kusum was among the first to advocate for gender inclusion in the water sector”, WfWP’s President Ms Bouman-Dentener elaborates. “In her country, Sri Lanka, she has founded the Network of Women Water Professionals, NetWwater, and developed many successful water & sanitation projects. As representative in WfWP’s strategic alliance with the International Water Association, she spearheads their joint programme on furthering Women Leadership in the water sector. “Kusum has been instrumental in the successes we celebrate on Women Leadership in water and sanitation.”
The Women in Water Award serves to recognize the achievements of a woman engineer or scientist working in the water field, with more than 10 years of experience, and with demonstrable excellence in academic, service, research or administration. Dedicated to the memory of Hei-jin Woo, a Korean female engineer and scientist working in the water field, the prize is awarded annually by the International Water Association (IWA). The Award will be presented to Ms Kusum Athukorala at the IWA World Water Congress which will be held September 16 to 21 in Busan, South Korea.
