WfWP member NetWwater finalist of “Gender Just Climate Solution Awards”
At the Cop 21 the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change has organised a gender day on the 8th of December.
The gender day at COP 21/CMP 11 is firmly focused on women’s role as leaders, innovators, and change agents in addressing climate change.
WfWPs member NetWwater's Jalavahini project is a finalist of the “Gender Just Climate Solution Awards” in the category non-technical solutions. Congratulations to NetWwater! For more background on the Jalavahini project click here.
At 11:30-13:00 there is a session at the UNFCCC conference center, observer room 01 on “Gender just climate solutions”: Women and men from around the world present their good practices and their roles in sustainable local economies and climate solutions. During the session the projects and the publication of the Gender Just Climate solution awards are presented.
NetWwater is of course very pleased with their nomination and will be joining the session by Skype.
Response of Kusum Athukorala, the Founding Chair of NetWwater:
“Each time we trudge home from an 8 hour field day poking around home gardens in Anuradhapura I asked myself why we don’t just sit at home and watch climate change documentaries on Al Jazeera and BBC without pushing this utopia of improving food security through nontoxic home gardening.
Jalavahini’s team -slogging through challenges such as drought, in fighting with local politicians, local hostilities, no support from local extension services, pest attacks and floods- is excited about the nomination. It is a recognition of our collective efforts and a collective victory for the small group of community women -who are delighted that their vegetable harvests are fetching top prices!“
