Implementation in Europe – United Nations Environmental Conference on Sustainable Development Goals
Thursday 12 November 2015: Implementation in Europe – United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) Opportunities for Engagement of Major Groups and Stakeholders (MGS)
Friday 13 November: UNEP & Regional Consultation Meeting for UNEA2 (UNECE Region).
At the United Nations global summit in September 2015 world leaders adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development establishing a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by 2030. This action plan for people, planet and prosperity aims at ending poverty and fighting inequality worldwide while respecting the boundaries of the planet. It will require transformational changes from developing as well as developed countries.
This conference assessed the challenges set by the new agenda globally as well as for Europe and provided a forum for discussions between political decision-makers and civil society on how to put SDGs into practice. High-level speakers from the UN and European institutions and representatives from civil society organisations and other stakeholders from the pan-European region presented their plans and ideas.
The conference was followed by the 2015 UNEP Regional Consultation for Europe (RCM) with Major Groups and Stakeholders (MGS) from the UNECE region to discuss and contribute with their positions to the preparation of the second session of the United Nation Environment Assembly (UNEA-2) convening in May 2016. This session will focus on delivering on the environmental dimension of the 2030 sustainable development agenda, including the implementation of SDGs.
