Gender-Water-Development: the untapped connection
WfWP message on the occasion of World Water Day 2014
Water is the source of life. We depend on it for our well-being and development. With the world population growing and developing at an accelerated pace, meeting the current and future water needs for domestic uses, food, energy, economic activities and healthy ecosystems is one of the prime challenges of our time.
Therefore, water security should be addressed as one of the highest priorities in the post-2015 development agenda and water must figure prominently as a dedicated Sustainable Development Goal.
Being involved in water provision and access is an effective empowerment tool.
Women for Water Partnership enables women to take a leading role in the development of water projects in their communities. The support and backing of our global women's civil society network gives locals a voice, and the tools and confidence to act. Obtaining the recognition of their communities and the local leadership puts women in a position to address other issues that concern them: violence against women, health, education, reproductive rights, HIV/AIDS etc.
The UN member states have endorsed the Human Right to Water. In realizing adequate and affordable access for all, stakeholder groups and sectors in society have common but differentiated responsibilities. The meaningful participation of women in the provision, management and safeguarding of water is known to decrease irresponsible use and pollution, to prevent corruption and conflicts over water, and to increase water efficiency and the sustainability of interventions.
Making women’s active engagement possible helps to accelerate the implementation of the Human Right to Water.
The Gender-Water-Development nexus is largely untapped but has huge potential to achieve universal access and to accelerate sustainable and equitable development.
Women for Water Partnerships wishes you all a happy and fruitful World Water Day
