WfWP: 10 years of women making a difference
During the 12th Session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-12), Women for Water Partnership was officially launched as a WSSD-type2 partnership. We have since been the voice of women in water matters, worldwide, and have raised the profile of women in the water sector, both in a professional capacity and as an important interest group in society. We have influenced the global agenda on integrated water resources management, gender mainstreaming, and access to water as a human right. We are particularly proud of our successes in improving the situation of women and water in developing countries and in linking grassroots, national and international stakeholders in water management. Our member organisations have a visible, effective influence on national policies, and have conducted a myriad of concerted actions and local projects to accelerate the implementation of internationally agreed water-related development goals.
The many successes and inspired engagement of WfWP started from a vision of what was needed to speed up the implementation of internationally agreed, water-related development goals; having observed that in practice the central role of women in providing, managing and safeguarding water, as articulated in the Dublin Principles for IWRM, was not receiving the attention that was so much needed. The insight, commitment and perseverance of the Honorary Founder of WfWP, Mrs. Alice Bouman-Dentener has formed the heart of the organization and made WfWP thrive.
By bundling the forces of women’s civil society organisations worldwide, and bringing together women leadership from all layers and sectors in water governance, WfWP has built a strong, reliable and influential network which is contributing to changing our traditional water management structures. We are working with highly talented, dedicated women leaders from 25 women’s networks in some 100 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, the EECCA region and Western Europe. WfWP is deeply indebted to its member organisations. Without your devotion and participation we could not have reached over 1 million women and their communities worldwide.
Ten years of Women for Water Partnership has been a rewarding, educational, turbulent, interesting, and challenging experience. A rollercoaster ride that has brought us many inspiring and worthwhile memories.
WfWPs work is far from completed. With the upcoming post-2015 development agenda, we are actively pursuing our goals, and we plan to double our efforts to facilitate women’s actions for development, and assist in providing women with equal opportunities and means to pursue their actions and projects. We cheer for at least another 10 years of doing what we do best; bridging internationally agreed principles for sustainable development and day-to-day practice in water management and the delivery of water and sanitation service.
Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to WfWP!
