Menstruation Hygiene Day: WEP grabs the attention of school boys
Women Environmental Programme (WEP) during this year’s Global Menstrual Hygiene day on May 28th engaged in a four days celebration and media campaign to create awareness and sensitize Nigerian people on the importance and impact of menstruation and menstrual hygiene management. Staff of WEP visited also schools for questions and answers sessions with adolescent girls and boys.
"We had a lot of interesting question from the boys", tells WEP's Ruth During. "A boy asked for example: 'How can I walk up to a girl who has blood stains on her uniform and tell her, wont she be offended? How can I give her my support and make her believe am not taunting her?'."
To reach the general public WEP participated in radio talk shows: "We believe it’s time to break the silence over menstruation in Nigeria. All our programs and event were a success and impacted a lot of lives especially the school children. Some schools even appealed to our organisation to continue our trainings to create the awareness. Which is what we will do because a lot needs to be done in this area and we will not relent!"
