The Mulheres em Ação no Pantanal (Women in Action in the Pantanal - Mupan) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. It was founded on August 20, 2000, with the main objective of "enabling the participation of women as multipliers in the context of gender and the environment, defending economic and social strength, contributing to gender equity and sustainability." Currently, MUPAN has 35 members, mostly volunteers and about 100 employees from several municipalities in the Upper Paraguay Basin and the Pantanal.
Mupan has implemented actions in partnerships with national and international governmental and non-governmental institutions, including the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), the IUCN Dutch Committee (mainly through the Alliance for Ecosystems Program), Wetlands International (WI), to develop research, training, access to information and support to the implementation of local groups, especially with grassroots educators, leadership and collective empowerment.
Mupan promotes debates and various initiatives to include gender issues in the main police and CSO agencies to promote gender equality and empowerment in the Pantanal. It facilitates multi-stakeholder platforms and learning environments as well as communication tools, enabling local actors to promote and multiply gender-related debates and empower women in decision-making spaces.
Mupan firmly believes in the power of combining various perspectives and backgrounds to generate innovative and transformative thinking as well as new solutions on the ground. It works by strengthening partnerships with academic sectors, other grassroots NGOs and public actors.
