Since 1898, the Netherlands Council of Women (Nederlandse Vrouwen Raad - NVR) is the national umbrella of women’s organisations/networks in the Netherlands. NVR currently consists of over 50 member organisations reaching about 1 million women from different sectors in Dutch society.
The NVR aims to achieve the full and equal participation of women at all levels in society and fosters equitable growth on the basis of gender equality. In order to achieve this the NVR offers pro-active and on request advise to the Dutch government, initiates a variety of projects with civil society organisations, national and local authorities, the public and private sector, and organises regular network meetings.
Ever since Marga Klompé, who in 1956 became the first female minister in The Netherlands, in 1947 was invited to join a delegation of the Dutch government to the UN in New York to speak on behalf of women in The Netherlands, the NVR recruits yearly a women’s representative to ask attention for the specific position of women at the UN General Assembly.
