Uganda Women for Water and Sanitation (UWWS) dreams to make significant contributions towards equitable access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities; and to empower women and girls to address the root causes of poverty, and gender inequality. UWWS targets women in rural and peri-urban areas living below the poverty line. Key activities include raising awareness on sanitation & hygiene practices and gaining commitment of political, social & opinion leaders on these issues.
UWWS pays special attention to empowering teen girls and child mothers to live with dignity, to ensure they reach their maximum potential in life, and reap successful futures. Activities build the capacity of girls empowerment clubs in major community based structures/functional institutions such as schools, churches, other formal and informal groups in the community. These clubs strengthen advocacy and decision making, and coordination with other support structures to address issues that affect their wellbeing. These sustainable impacts on women and girls contribute to achieving SDG5 (gender equality) and SDG 6 (water).
