2015 put Women and Water solid on the Global Agenda

Women for Water Partnership (WfWP) can look back with pride at the milestones achieved in 2015. Along with others we have been fighting hard for the inclusion of water as one of the seventeen new Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations and we are thrilled it has been included as SDG6.
Together with SDG5 (gender equality) and the fact that water has an impact on nearly every other SDG, there is now a clear global roadmap towards our mission: A water secure world in which women are heard and empowered to exercise their full potential to achieve equitable and sustainable development.
Our 25 member organizations, often working with limited means, operate as frontrunners in reaching this goal. In 2015 we once again delivered safe access to water aiding many more women, men and children. More people now also have access to proper toilets and practice healthy hygiene. Women have obtained control over water resources to e.g. irrigate their land, which has allowed them to start up their own businesses.
Through this empowerment, women can confidently raise their voices. A major achievement, especially considering the challenging circumstances, such as vested cultural beliefs, limited access to finances and land, having to work in contested areas or the indifference shown by governments.
WfWP has and will continue to play a leading role in advocating the crucial role women must have in water management at key international platforms around the world.
